Jiangmen 江门Jiāngmén
Emigrants' homeland, where money earned overseas built towers in the rice fields

About Jiangmen
Jiangmen's Siyi counties are the ancestral home of about four million overseas Chinese, and some half a million Chinese Americans trace their roots to Taishan alone. In the early 1900s, money sent home from North America built the fortified towers of the Kaiping Diaolou and Villages, inscribed by UNESCO in 2007. At Birds' Paradise, near Liang Qichao's family home, a single banyan has spread over a river islet for nearly 400 years, sheltering thousands of egrets, and Francis Xavier died on Shangchuan Island in 1552.
