About Temple of King Ashoka
A Buddhist monastery at the foot of Mount Mao east of Ningbo, traditionally founded in the Western Jin and named by Emperor Wu of Liang, and known for a relic said to come from the Buddha's skull. The monk Jianzhen stayed here in 744 between attempts to reach Japan; the temple was fifth of the Five Mountains under the Southern Song and is regarded as an ancestral temple of Japan's Rinzai school. Most of its halls were rebuilt in the Qing dynasty, and it remains an active monastery.
