About Tiantong Temple

A large Chan monastery in the forested Taibai Mountains east of Ningbo, traditionally founded in the Western Jin, ranked third of the Five Mountains under the Southern Song and regarded as the cradle of Japan's Sōtō Zen school. Its oldest surviving hall dates from 1631, and an avenue of more than 200 old ginkgo trees turns gold in late autumn. It remains an active monastery.
