About Zhanjiang

Zhanjiang covers the Leizhou Peninsula, whose cape at Dengloujiao is the southernmost point of mainland China, and grew from the port that France occupied in 1898 and held as the leased territory of Guangzhouwan until 1945. The former French legation in Xiashan survives from that time, as does the Naozhou Lighthouse. Inland, Huguangyan Maar Lake fills a volcanic crater, and Leizhou, home of Lei opera, keeps the Leizu Temple and a folk tradition of worshipping carved stone dogs.
