About Harbin

Harbin began in 1898 as a base of the Russian-built Chinese Eastern Railway, and Saint Sophia Cathedral and Central Street still give the old centre a Russian look. Across the Songhua River, Sun Island hosts huge snow sculptures in winter, when Harbin Ice & Snow World rises from blocks cut from the frozen river and glows from within. The Siberian Tiger Park is also north of the river, and at Acheng, south-east of the centre, lies the site of the Jin dynasty capital Shangjing Huiningfu.
