About Luoyang

Between the Western Zhou and the Tang, six capitals rose on neighbouring sites around Luoyang, used by eleven dynasties, and with Chang'an the city marks the eastern end of UNESCO's Silk Roads corridor. South of the city, the Longmen Grottoes line the cliffs of the Yi River with more than 100,000 Buddhist statues, most carved under the Northern Wei and Tang. White Horse Temple is by tradition China's first Buddhist temple, founded in 68 AD, and every spring the city holds a peony festival.
