About Beitun

Beitun, the city of the 10th Division of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (Bingtuan), lies on the Irtysh between Altay city and Fuhai. Its name, 'northern settlement', was chosen in 1958 because it was the army's northernmost farming garrison in China, and the division's headquarters moved here in 1959. It became a city in 2011 and is a road and rail junction for the Altay region, with no listed sights of its own.
