About Wujiaqu

Wujiaqu, about 40 km north of Ürümqi, is the city of the 6th Division of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (Bingtuan), whose headquarters moved here in 1953. Its name, 'five families' canal', recalls a channel that five households dug from the Laolong River to water their fields around the end of the Qing dynasty. The city, set up in 2004, is mostly irrigated farmland on the southern edge of the Junggar Basin and has no listed sights of its own.
