About Wang Renqiu Stele

A red-sandstone memorial stele raised in 698, under Empress Wu Zetian's Zhou dynasty, by the son of Wang Renqiu, a local official who helped the Tang put down a revolt; it is the only Tang stele surviving in the Kunming area. About 4 metres high on a tortoise base, it is topped with two dragons and a Buddhist niche, and its inscription of more than 1,600 characters includes over 150 of the new characters introduced under Empress Wu. Since 1991 it has stood in a pavilion within a small stele garden in the hills south-west of Anning.
