Why go to Western Hills & Dragon Gate
The Western Hills rise steeply along the western shore of Dianchi, Kunming's great lake, cloaked in pine forest and dotted with temples. The highlight is Dragon Gate, where the Taoist halls of Sanqing Ge give way to a chain of shrines, tunnels and stairways cut into a sheer cliff, along a ledge path so narrow that people pass in single file. Along the road up, the Buddhist temples of Huating and Taihua sit in quiet woods.
The story
Work on the Dragon Gate grottoes began in 1781 under a Taoist named Wu Laiqing, and stonemasons spent decades chiselling them by hand. The last chamber, Datian Ge ('Pavilion Reaching Heaven'), holds a statue of Kuixing, god of the imperial examinations: by tradition, a scholar who climbed this far had leapt the Dragon Gate, like the carp of legend that turns into a dragon. Seen from the city, the ridge is said to look like a woman lying on her back, hence its nickname, the Sleeping Beauty.
What to see at Western Hills & Dragon Gate
- Huating Temple 华亭寺: A Buddhist temple in the woods below the cliffs. It dates to the Dali kingdom, was named by a Ming emperor in 1441, and has a pair of seated guardian figures in front of its main hall.
- Taihua Temple 太华寺: A temple at about 2,170 m that faces east across Dianchi Lake. Its first buildings date to 1306, and its halls are decorated with clay figures by the same sculptor as the 500 arhats of Qiongzhu Temple.
- Sanqing Pavilion 三清阁: A Taoist complex arranged in tiers up the cliff, from the Lingguan Hall at the bottom to the Taiji Palace at the top.
- Dragon Gate Grottoes 龙门石窟群: A chain of stairways, tunnels and carved chambers cut by local masons over some 70 years from the late 1700s. The Datian Pavilion chamber and the Dragon Gate arch at about 2,300 m are the high points.
- Nie Er's tomb 聂耳墓: The tomb of Nie Er stands on the hillside, with a small memorial hall beside it that opens from Tuesday to Sunday.
How to visit Western Hills & Dragon Gate
The sights run uphill in the order Huating, Taihua, Sanqing Pavilion and Dragon Gate, linked by the hill road. Take the scenic-area shuttle, or the new gondola once it opens, to the upper end and walk down, so you meet the narrow cliff path while fresh. A half day is enough for Dragon Gate and one temple; a full day adds the other temples. The Nie Er memorial hall is closed on Mondays.
How to get to Western Hills & Dragon Gate
Metro Line 3 runs to its western terminus, Xishan Park (Western Hills Park), about 15 km from central Kunming; scenic-area shuttle buses climb from the visitor centre there into the hills. The Dianchi cable car also crosses the lake to the Western Hills from Haigeng Park on the eastern shore.
Where to stay
Base yourself in Kunming, which gives the full range of hotels, and reach the hills by Metro Line 3 and the park shuttles.
What to eat
- Flower cake 鲜花饼: A crisp pastry filled with edible flower petals, mostly rose, and Yunnan's best-known pastry; it is sold all over Kunming.
- Crossing-the-bridge noodles 过桥米线: A bowl of hot broth with rice noodles and other ingredients added at the table. It began in Mengzi in southern Yunnan and is listed among Kunming's regional foods.
Tips for visiting Western Hills & Dragon Gate
- The old chairlift up to Dragon Gate closed in April 2025 to be replaced by a new gondola; until it opens, use the scenic-area shuttles and electric carts, or walk.
- The cliff path squeezes down to single file, so it jams on weekends and holidays; come early on a weekday.
- In winter, pair the cable car with a stop at the Haigeng Dam on the far shore, where flocks of black-headed gulls gather.
