About Zhongshan Park

Just west of Tian'anmen, Zhongshan Park grew out of the Altar of Land and Grain (Shejitan), where Ming and Qing emperors made offerings to the gods of soil and harvest; its square marble altar is still spread with earth in five colours for the five directions. Opened to the public in 1914, the grounds were renamed in 1928 after Sun Yat-sen, whose coffin lay in the altar's hall in 1925, and also hold ancient cypresses, pavilions and a stone archway first raised for the German envoy Clemens von Ketteler, killed in 1900.

How to get to Zhongshan Park
