About Peking Legation Quarter (Dongjiaominxiang)

From 1861 foreign legations clustered along this lane east of Tiananmen Square, and after the siege of 1900 it became a walled, foreign-run Legation Quarter with its own banks, barracks and churches. A group of early 20th-century European-style buildings survives, among them the former legations of Japan, France and Italy, the old Yokohama Specie Bank and Citibank buildings and St Michael's Church of 1904. Most are offices seen from the street, so the quarter is best explored on foot as a walk through Beijing's colonial-era history.
