About Pudu Temple
Raised on a high brick terrace in the lanes east of the Forbidden City, Pudu Temple stands on the site of the mansion of Dorgon, the Manchu prince-regent of the early Qing, which was turned into a temple to the Tibetan Buddhist protector deity Mahakala in 1694. Its main hall, with features of early Manchu palace building, sits on a Ming-era carved stone base, and since its restoration in 2001–03 the temple grounds have served as a small public garden.
