About Beijing Zoo

Regarded as China's oldest public zoo, it grew out of the Qing government's agricultural experimental farm founded in 1906 and first opened to visitors in 1908. Besides the giant pandas and other animal houses, the wooded grounds keep buildings of the old farm, among them the brick gateway and Changguanlou, a Baroque-style two-storey villa built in 1908 as a stopping place for Empress Dowager Cixi on her boat trips to the Summer Palace.
