About Jamia Mosque

Jamia Mosque on Shelley Street is the oldest mosque in Hong Kong. The present building dates from 1915 to 1916, paid for by the Bombay merchant Haji Mohamed Essack Elias to replace an 1849 mosque on the same site. It has a minaret topped by a dome, pointed multifoil archways, coloured glass windows and an octagonal dome over the prayer hall, and it remains an important place of worship for the city's Muslims.
