Why go to Victoria Peak
The Peak is the high ground above Central on Hong Kong Island, where the Peak Tram deposits you at the wok-shaped Peak Tower for the classic view over the towers and Victoria Harbour. The tower holds shops, restaurants, Madame Tussauds and the Sky Terrace 428 viewing platform on its roof. Most visitors then walk the Peak Circle Walk, a shaded loop on Lugard Road and Harlech Road with wider and quieter lookouts.
The story
The Peak drew European residents in the 19th century for its cooler air; they were carried up in sedan chairs until the Peak Tram opened in 1888 as Asia's first funicular railway. Terry Farrell's Peak Tower, completed in 1997, was deliberately sited in a dip of the ridge and kept to 428 m above sea level so that it would not interrupt the line of the hills.
What to see at Victoria Peak
- Peak Tram 山顶缆车: Asia's first funicular railway, opened in 1888 and reopened in August 2022 after a lengthy renovation. It climbs steeply from Garden Road through the Mid-Levels to 396 m above sea level, at gradients of up to about 26 degrees, so the buildings you pass seem to lean.
- Peak Tower and Sky Terrace 428 凌霄阁与凌霄阁摩天台428: The wok-shaped tower sits at Victoria Gap above the tram's upper terminus. Its rooftop Sky Terrace 428, named for its height above sea level, looks over the harbour and city, and the tower also has shops, restaurants and Madame Tussauds.
- Lugard Road 卢吉道: A narrow contour path on the hillside about 400 m above sea level, part of the Hong Kong Trail, with open lookouts over Victoria Harbour and the towers of Central. It is the quieter way to see the view, away from the crowd around the tower.
- Harlech Road 夏力道: An old hillside road, already built by 1906, that completes the circular walk back to the tower. It runs under trees along the slopes of the Peak.
- Victoria Peak Garden 山顶公园: A garden uphill from the tower along Mount Austin Road, about a 30–40 minute walk according to the Peak's own walking guide, with a wide view over the city and a small refreshment kiosk.
How to visit Victoria Peak
Take the Peak Tram up from Garden Road, look around the Peak Tower and its rooftop terrace, then follow the signs to Lugard Road for the Peak Circle Walk. The loop takes about 40–60 minutes with stops and ends back at the tower. With only an hour or two, ride the tram, take in the view and have a drink; with half a day, add the full circuit and the walk up to Victoria Peak Garden.
How to get to Victoria Peak
The Peak Tram runs from Garden Road in Central, a 10–15 minute walk from Central MTR station (Exit J2), and climbs to the Peak Tower in a few minutes. Citybus 15 from Central (Exchange Square) and green minibus 1 from Central (Two IFC) also run up to the Peak.
Where to stay
Stay in Central, Sheung Wan or Admiralty on Hong Kong Island, which are close to the tram's lower station and to the Star Ferry. Tsim Sha Tsui on the Kowloon side faces the Peak across the harbour and is also a short ferry or MTR ride away.
What to eat
- Hong Kong-style milk tea 港式奶茶: Strong black tea blended with evaporated milk, the everyday drink of Hong Kong's cha chaan teng cafes; the Peak's own restaurants are mostly international, so look for one back in Central.
- Hong Kong egg tart 港式蛋挞: A flaky or shortcrust shell filled with a smooth, lightly set egg custard, easy to find at bakeries in Central before or after the ride.
Tips for visiting Victoria Peak
- Go up on a clear day and check the forecast first; haze or cloud can hide the harbour view completely.
- The Peak Circle Walk takes about 40–60 minutes and has few facilities, so carry water; it gets crowded at weekends and on public holidays, so start early or stay on for the sunset.
- Queues for the tram can be long at weekends and on public holidays; the bus or green minibus from Central is a ready alternative.
