About Yalu River Broken Bridge

The Broken Bridge is what remains of the first bridge built across the Yalu, a 12-span steel railway bridge that Japan began in 1909 to link Korea with the Eurasian rail network and that later carried road traffic. United States aircraft bombed it in November 1950 during the Korean War; the Korean-side spans were later dismantled, and the four surviving Chinese spans have been a walkway since 1993, ending mid-river at a viewing platform beside the old swing-span mechanism. The Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge stands just upstream, and the city of Sinuiju faces the walkway across the water.
