About Songyue Pagoda

Built in the Northern Wei in the early 520s, this brick pagoda about 40 m high is the oldest surviving brick pagoda in China and the oldest multi-eaved one, and its twelve-sided plan is unique among Chinese pagodas of its type. Fifteen closely stacked eaves rise above a tall first storey, and the pagoda stands in the grounds of the former Songyue Temple at the foot of Mount Song. It was inscribed in 2010 as part of the Historic Monuments of Dengfeng World Heritage site.
