About Fawang Temple

A Buddhist temple at the foot of Taishi Mountain that by tradition was founded in AD 71, which would make it one of the earliest in China; its halls are Qing buildings and rebuilds made after 1987. On the slope behind stand six old pagodas, led by a fifteen-tiered square brick pagoda about 35 m tall, dated to the Sui or early Tang, with smaller Tang and Five Dynasties pagodas and a Yuan pagoda of 1316. The notch between two peaks east of the temple frames the rising moon at the Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the traditional sights of Mount Song.
