About Wanfotang and Kongshui Cave

A Buddhist site above a karst spring cave, founded as a temple in the Tang dynasty: a Ming-rebuilt brick hall stands on a platform over the mouth of the Kongshui Cave, and inside it is a long Tang marble relief of Manjushri and Samantabhadra with a host of bodhisattvas. Buddha niches and carved sutras from the Sui to the Jin line the cave walls, and on the slope stand a Liao 'flower pagoda', one of only two in Beijing, and a Yuan pagoda with dense eaves.

How to get to Wanfotang and Kongshui Cave

In Wanfotang village, Hebei town, Fangshan District, about 40 km south-west of central Beijing and 4 km east of Shihua Cave. In 2025 the hall and the cave were kept locked, so visitors could see only the exteriors and the two pagodas.
