About Yunju Temple

A Buddhist temple at the foot of Shijing Shan ('Stone Sutra Mountain'), famous for the Buddhist scriptures that monks carved on thousands of stone slabs from the Sui dynasty to the Ming, begun by the monk Jingwan to protect the texts from destruction. The slabs were stored in nine caves on the mountain and in a vault below the temple; the halls were bombed in the 1940s and rebuilt from the 1980s, but several Tang and Liao pagodas survive, among them the Liao North Pagoda.
