About Black Pagoda (Wuta)
A seven-storey octagonal granite pagoda at the eastern foot of Wushan Hill, begun in 941 by Wang Yanxi, ruler of the Min kingdom, and left at seven of its nine planned storeys when he was assassinated in 944. Weathering has darkened the stone, hence its popular name, and dark shale panels carved with Buddhas and donors' names are set into every storey. It is one of the few stone pagodas left from the Five Dynasties period and now stands among modern apartment blocks.
