About Sanfang Qixiang

Fuzhou's best-preserved old quarter, a grid of three lanes and seven alleys either side of pedestrianised Nanhou Street that keeps the walled-ward street plan laid out when the city walls were built in the late Tang. Behind high walls stand Ming-to-Republican courtyard houses of scholar-official families, several of them open to visitors, among them the translator Yan Fu's home on Langguan Alley and a mansion with Fuzhou's only waterside opera stage. The smaller Zhuzifang block, just east across Bayiqi Road, shares the national heritage listing.
