About Hualin Temple
A small temple compound at the foot of Pingshan Hill whose main hall, built in 964 when Fuzhou was ruled by the Wuyue kingdom, is regarded as the oldest surviving timber building south of the Yangtze. Its tiers of bracket sets and single-eave hip-and-gable roof preserve early Song carpentry, a style thought to have influenced Japanese temple building in the Kamakura period. The gate and side halls around it were added when the hall was restored in the 1980s.
