About Wanmu Caotang (Kang Youwei's School)

This grey-brick hall of three courtyards, built in 1804 as the Qiu clan's lodging for examination candidates, is where the reformer Kang Youwei opened his private school in 1891. Among his students were Liang Qichao and others who later led the Hundred Days' Reform of 1898, after which the school, by then at another site, was closed and its books destroyed. Restored after the residents living in it were moved out from 2004, it is now open to visitors as a small museum.
