About Mount Heng (Beiyue Hengshan)
Mount Heng is the northern one of China's Five Great Mountains, rising to 2,016.1 m at Tianfengling just south of Hunyuan; it took over the title of Northern Peak from a mountain in Hebei in the early Qing. Its temples, halls and pavilions are built against cliffs and in caves, and the Beiyue Temple stands high on the main peak, the only one of the five mountains' main temples built there. A cable car and walking routes serve the temple area, and the Hanging Temple on neighbouring Cuiping Peak is a separate sight.
How to get to Mount Heng (Beiyue Hengshan)
About 5 km south-east of Hunyuan and about 67 km by road (around 1.5 hours) from Datong railway station; visitors leave cars at the Hengshan visitor centre and take a shuttle bus into the scenic area.
