About Yuanjue Temple Pagoda, Hunyuan
A nine-storey octagonal brick pagoda of 1158, over 30 m high, in the old town of Hunyuan, known locally as the Little Temple Pagoda. Its base is carved with lions, lotus petals and rows of musicians and dancers, and the upper tiers imitate timber brackets and eaves. The iron phoenix on top still turns with the wind, a rare surviving ancient wind-direction indicator.
