About Shrine of Living Buddha

The hall on Shenguang Ridge above Jiuhua Street that houses the remains of Kim Gyo-gak, the Silla prince-monk who died in 794 and was venerated as Ksitigarbha; his body was placed in a stone stupa, around which the hall was later built. Inside the iron-tiled, pagoda-like hall a seven-storey octagonal wooden pagoda enshrines the stupa, surrounded by statues of Ksitigarbha and the Ten Kings of Hell. Unusually, the hall faces north, towards Kim's homeland in Korea.
