About Rock Inscription at Joss House Bay

The inscription is cut into a rock at Joss House Bay, near the southern tip of the Clear Water Bay Peninsula, and is dated to 1274 in the Southern Song dynasty, which makes it the oldest dated inscription found in Hong Kong. It records a visit to the area by a salt administration officer and his friend, and gives the history of two temples, one on each side of the Fat Tong Mun channel. The stairs that lead down to the bay and its Tin Hau Temple pass the inscription.
