About Daxiangguo Temple
A large Buddhist temple in the centre of Kaifeng, with roots in the 6th century, refounded in 706 and renamed Daxiangguo Temple in 712, which under the Northern Song was the capital's leading monastery and a major trading market. Flooded in 1642 and rebuilt under the Qing, it keeps an octagonal Glazed Hall with a four-faced, thousand-armed Guanyin, the only image to survive when the temple was turned into a market in 1927. The temple's Buddhist music is listed as national intangible heritage, and a statue recalls the Water Margin hero Lu Zhishen uprooting a willow here.
