About Shanshangan Guild Hall
A guild hall built in 1776 by merchants from Shanxi, Shaanxi and Gansu living in Kaifeng, on the site of a Ming mansion of the descendants of the general Xu Da. It is famous for its carving in wood, stone and brick, best seen on the screen wall, the only old opera stage left in Kaifeng, a six-pillared green-tiled archway and the main hall to Guan Yu with seven tiers of wooden carving under its eaves. On the main hall's gables the merchants inscribed their mottos, 'fair trade' and 'profit through righteousness'.
