About Dizang Temple Sutra Pillar

A seven-tier octagonal pillar of red sandstone, about 6.5 metres tall, carved in the Dali Kingdom period with Esoteric Buddhist imagery: Heavenly Kings, Buddhas and bodhisattvas fill tiers of niches, with texts in Chinese and Sanskrit. Rediscovered in 1919 on the site of the old Dizang Temple, it now stands under a glass roof in the central hall of the Kunming Museum, whose collections also include bronzes, Ming blue-and-white porcelain and relics of the wartime Flying Tigers.
