About Historic Buildings of Yunnan Observatory, Fenghuang Hill

Three historic buildings on Fenghuang Hill in eastern Kunming, within what is now the Yunnan Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Two blue-brick blocks, with a variable-star dome and a solar spectrograph darkroom, date from 1939, when the astronomy institute of the Academia Sinica moved west during the war and set up an observing station here; a red-brick sunspot observatory with a metal dome followed in 1957. The observatory is still a working research centre.
