About Geyuan Temple
A Buddhist temple in the old town of Laiyuan whose Manjusri Hall, traditionally dated to 966, is counted among the 'eight great Liao structures' and is the earliest of them. It is a timber hall with deep eaves and fewer interior columns than usual, window lattices from the Liao to the Qing dynasties, and wall paintings that survive mostly under later mud plaster. In the courtyard hangs an iron bell cast in 1114, weighing about two tonnes and bearing over 1,200 Chinese characters.
How to get to Geyuan Temple
On Guangchang Street in the old town of Laiyuan, a short walk or taxi ride from the town centre; regular opening resumed in May 2026 after about 17 years of restoration closure.
