About Former Enze Hospital
Three two-storey Western-style buildings joined by covered bridges on the slope of Beigu Mountain in Linhai, the remains of the first Western-medicine hospital in Taizhou, opened by the British Anglican mission in 1901. In 1942 its doctors treated injured crewmen of a B-25 bomber from the Doolittle Raid that had come down off the Sanmen coast, including pilot Ted Lawson, whose leg was amputated here, before they were escorted west; Lawson told the story in his memoir Thirty Seconds over Tokyo. Restored by Taizhou Hospital, the buildings now house its history museum, with exhibitions on the hospital's founding and the rescue of the American airmen.
