About Walled City of Taizhou Fu

Linhai's old walled town, seat of Taizhou prefecture from 591 until 1993, is now a 5A scenic area of 3.12 km² taking in the city wall, Ziyang Street, East Lake and Jinshan Hill. The wall follows the Ling River and climbs the ridge of Beigu Mountain; the Ming general Qi Jiguang raised it and added two-storey hollow watchtowers against pirate raids, and its river-facing bastions were given rounded fronts to withstand floods. Inside, the 1,080 m flagstone Ziyang Street is lined with old shops, small museums and craft workshops, and about 28,000 people still live in the old town.
