About Wanfoshan Grottoes
A group of Northern Wei Buddhist caves cut into a hillside on the north bank of the Yellow River, in the part of Mengjin that was Jili District until 2021. The upper and lower temple areas hold more than 300 figures, among them a cliff-carved standing Buddha about 5 m tall flanked by bodhisattvas, groups of the Buddhas of the Three Ages and reliefs of donors in procession that show the influence of Yungang. After rainwater flooded some statues in 2022, shelters were built and the enclosure walls and gatehouse repaired.
How to get to Wanfoshan Grottoes
About 35 km north of central Luoyang by road, across the Yellow River in the former Jili District, now part of Mengjin District. The caves are enclosed by a wall with a gatehouse, so check that they are open before going.
