About Guangdong Guild Hall (Tianjin Museum of Theatre)
Built in 1903–07 with money raised by Cantonese merchants in Tianjin, this guild hall is one of the largest and best-preserved Qing guild-hall complexes in China, with a courtyard house, an apprenticeship hall and a classical opera theatre whose pillarless stage has a domed ceiling that carries sound. Sun Yat-sen spoke here twice in 1912. It now houses the Tianjin Museum of Theatre, with exhibitions on the history of Chinese opera and Peking opera and on opera costume and characters.
