About East Lake, Shaoxing
A small lake on the eastern edge of Shaoxing that fills an old quarry: from the Han dynasty onwards masons cut away half of a hill of grey stone, leaving sheer cliffs and deep pools, which the late-Qing local scholar Tao Junxuan enclosed with a long dyke and laid out as a garden. Small boats take visitors under stone bridges and into the cliff caves, such as Xiantao and Taogong caves, past pavilions along the shore, and the Tao She hall on the west side commemorates the 1911 revolutionary Tao Chengzhang.
