About Hanshan Temple

A Buddhist temple at Fengqiao, about 5 km west of Suzhou's old city, facing the old canal; tradition dates it to 502–519 and names it after the legendary monk-poet Hanshan, said to have been its abbot in the Tang. It owes its fame to Zhang Ji's Tang poem 'A Night Mooring by Maple Bridge', in which the temple's midnight bell reaches a traveller's boat. Destroyed in 1860 during the Taiping war, it was later rebuilt and today has a bell tower and a large bronze bell cast in 2007.
