About Lingering Garden

One of Suzhou's largest classical gardens, begun in 1593 by the official Xu Taishi outside Changmen gate, rebuilt by Liu Shu in 1794–1798 and given its present form and name by Sheng Kang in 1873–1876. Four sections — a central pond with its hill and pavilions, halls and courtyards packed closely to the east, and further sections to the west and north — are linked by long covered walkways set with stone calligraphy tablets. Its best-known feature is the Cloud-Capped Peak, a tall Taihu rock said to come from the Song emperor Huizong's collection; it is part of the Classical Gardens of Suzhou World Heritage Site.
