About Chongshan Temple

A royal temple built by Zhu Gang, Prince of Jin, in memory of his mother and completed in 1391, which was almost wholly burnt down in 1864 and now covers about a forty-sixth of its original area. The survivor is the Dabei Hall, about 20 m high with a double-eave roof, whose three Ming clay bodhisattvas, 8.3 m high, include a Thousand-armed Guanyin; an iron bell of 1506 hangs in the bell tower and a pair of Ming iron lions flank the gate. The temple is the seat of the Shanxi Buddhist Association and keeps a large collection of Song-to-Ming printed sutras.
