About Anqing

Anqing, on the north bank of the Yangtze, was Anhui's provincial capital for most of the years 1760–1938, and Huangmei opera took shape in the countryside around it from tea-picking songs. The Ming Zhenfeng Pagoda, once a beacon for boats, still marks the river bend. Inland rises Mount Tianzhu, whose old name, Wan Shan, gave the province its one-character abbreviation, and Tongcheng, which lent its name to a celebrated Qing school of prose, keeps its Confucian temple and Kongcheng Old Street.
