About Shijiazhuang

Shijiazhuang, the provincial capital, was a tiny settlement until railways arrived in the early 1900s and it overtook the older walled town of Zhengding. Zhengding, just to the north, is where the old city survives: Longxing Temple keeps a bronze Guanyin over 20 metres tall, cast early in the Song dynasty, and Linji Temple is the cradle of the school Japan calls Rinzai. South-east stands the Anji Bridge (Zhaozhou Bridge), built in 595–605, and south-west the Bridge-Tower Hall of Mount Cangyan spans a gorge.
