About White Deer Grotto Academy

A former Confucian academy in a wooded valley at the foot of Wulao Peak on the southern side of Mount Lushan, counted among the Four Great Academies of China. A school was founded here in the 10th century, and the academy was rebuilt in 1179–80 by the neo-Confucian scholar Zhu Xi, whose rules for students influenced later academies. The grounds include a gate, courtyards and halls, a gallery of stone inscriptions, the Zhu Xi shrine and a man-made stone grotto with a carved deer.
