About Nanjing Great Hall of the People

Built in 1935–36 as the National Assembly Hall, where the Republic of China's National Assembly met in 1946 and 1948, this four-storey hall on Changjiang Road pairs a modern symmetrical façade with simplified Chinese ornament and seats more than 3,400; it now hosts Nanjing's annual congress sessions and stage performances. Sharing its wall to the east is the former National Art Gallery, finished in 1936 to the same competition-winning design by Xi Fuquan as China's first national art museum. The gallery is now the old building of the Jiangsu Art Museum and reopened for exhibitions in 2017 after renovation.
