About Presidential Palace, Nanjing

A 9-hectare compound on Changjiang Road that was in turn a Ming prince's mansion, the office of the Qing viceroy of Liangjiang, the palace of the Taiping Heavenly King Hong Xiuquan, the seat of Sun Yat-sen's provisional presidency in 1912 and the headquarters of the Nationalist government and presidency until 1949. Since 2003 it has been the China Modern History Museum: an axis of Chinese-style halls behind the 1929 gateway leads to the 1936 Zichao Building with the offices of Chiang Kai-shek and Li Zongren, while the west side holds Sun Yat-sen's presidential office and the Xu Garden with its stone boat. Other buildings hold a reconstruction of the Taiping throne room and exhibitions on the site's history.
