About Turpan Karez Paradise
Turpan's karez are hand-dug underground channels that carry snowmelt from the Tian Shan across the gravel plain to the oases, and this park, opened in 1992 by the Xinjiang Karez Research Association, is a place to see one from the inside. A walkway more than 10 m below ground follows part of an old working karez past its tunnel and vertical shafts, and a museum explains with models and photographs how the system was dug and maintained. There is also a display of surface construction work, a vineyard watered by the karez and a raisin drying house.
