About Site of the August 7 Conference

A three-storey brick-and-concrete block in Hankou's former Russian concession, originally part of a foreign-built apartment complex, where leaders of the Chinese Communist Party met in secret on 7 August 1927, after the Kuomintang had turned on its communist allies, to decide the party's course. Mao Zedong's remark that political power grows out of the barrel of a gun is associated with this meeting. The building is now a memorial museum, with an exhibition on the conference on the ground floor and a reconstruction of the meeting room upstairs.
