About Kaiyuan Temple, Zhengding
The surviving part of a temple founded in 540 in the old town of Zhengding, with the square nine-tier Xumi Pagoda, about 42.5 m high and begun in 636, facing a two-storey bell tower across the former courtyard. Local heritage authorities describe the bell tower as the only Tang-dynasty bell tower still standing, and the carved stone columns of the gate tower, dated to 692, were re-erected in 2008. An excavation south of the temple, showing seven periods of layered remains, can be seen through a glass wall.
